In order to enhance weldability and lower the possibility of carbide precipitation, stainless steel 316L has a low carbon content (maximum 0.03%), 16–18% chromium, 10–14% nickel, and 2–3% molybdenum. Small amounts of silicon, phosphorus, and manganese are also present. Excellent corrosion resistance is provided by the alloy, particularly in marine environments and against chlorides. With good elongation and toughness, SS 316L has a tensile strength of roughly 485–620 MPa and a yield strength of roughly 170–310 MPa. In a variety of corrosive environments and temperatures, it maintains its strength and formability.
