Boiler Quality Plates and Sheets are generally made of carbon steel with a specific combination of manganese, silicon, and trace elements to increase toughness as well as strength. Some common grades are SA515 and SA516, with tensile strength varying from 415–620 MPa and yield strength varying between 220–310 MPa, depending on the type. These plates have high weldability, formability, as well as resistance against cracking under high pressure and temperature. The fine-grained nature of the material provides balanced mechanical properties and toughness, so it is well suited for pressure-bearing applications. Heat treatment operations also improve their hardness and performance characteristics.
