Pressure vessel applications use SA537 Class 1, a heat-treated carbon-manganese-silicon steel plate. Carbon (≤0.24%), manganese (0.7–1.6%), silicon (0.13–0.45%), phosphorus, and sulphur (each ≤0.035%) make up its composition. Its mechanical strength is increased by quenching and tempering it. The steel has an elongation of 22%, a tensile strength of 485–620 MPa, and a minimum yield strength of 240 MPa. SA537 Class 1 is perfect for welded pressure vessels and boiler construction in demanding service environments because it combines exceptional toughness, high impact resistance, and dependable performance under elevated pressure.

Tempering : Notch toughness can be improved by quenched cooling from hot rolling or normalizing by the supplier. If such a faster cooling rate is agreed upon between purchaser and supplier then the steel is also to be tempered at 1200 F.
