Stainless Steel 409 is a ferritic alloy predominantly made of chromium (10.5–11.75%), containing low carbon (≤0.08%) and nickel (≤0.5%) and also including manganese (≤1.0%), silicon (≤1.0%), and stabilizing compounds such as titanium (≥6x(C+N)). This alloy gives fair corrosion resistance and suitable high-temperature properties. SS 409 is mechanically characterized by tensile strength of 380–450 MPa, yield strength of 170–240 MPa, and elongation of about 20%. Its characteristics serve for environments where there is a need for fair strength and corrosion resistance, with this as an inexpensive substitute for higher grades of stainless steels for less severe conditions.
