Aluminium 2024 Plates and Sheets consist mainly of aluminium (approximately 90.7%) and copper (3.8–4.9%), with additions of manganese, magnesium, and traces of iron and silicon. The alloy has a good combination of strength, with tensile strength around 470 MPa and yield strength around 325 MPa. It also possesses good resistance to fatigue and reasonable machinability. But it has poor corrosion resistance, usually needing protective coatings. With Brinell hardness of approximately 120 HB, Aluminium 2024 is the material of choice where high strength-to-weight ratio and stress performance are important.
