AR 400 Sheets and Plates are high carbon content alloy steels with added alloying elements like manganese, chromium, and nickel to promote hardness and strength. The plates have a Brinell hardness number (BHN) of around 360–440, with high tensile strength of about 180 ksi (1240 MPa). The yield strength is generally more than 100 ksi (690 MPa), and they possess excellent wear and abrasion resistance. Though hard, AR 400 plates are fairly formable and weldable, characteristics which make them suitable for heavy-duty use where long service life and mechanical toughness are needed.
