Stainless Steel 317L is a low carbon austenitic stainless steel alloy with increased molybdenum content for improved corrosion resistance. Its usual composition contains Chromium (18–20%), Nickel (11–15%), Molybdenum (3–4%), and Carbon less than 0.03%. The alloy has superior mechanical properties such as 515 MPa minimum tensile strength, 205 MPa minimum yield strength, and 35% minimum elongation. The composition is improved in terms of weldability, resistance to crevice and pitting corrosion, and strength at high temperatures, which makes the alloy suitable for harsh environments.
