ASTM A242 Corten Steel Sheets and Plates contain mostly iron and copper (0.25–0.55%), chromium (0.50–1.25%), nickel (0.65–1.25%), and trace amounts of phosphorus and manganese. These alloying constituents create an oxide protective film, with improved corrosion resistance. Some of its mechanical properties are a yield strength minimum of 345 MPa (50 ksi) and ultimate tensile strength of 485 MPa (70 ksi). The steel has good weldability and toughness, even at low temperatures. Its self-healing surface guarantees long life in aggressive environments, and thus is ideal for outdoor and industrial uses.
