Kovar Foil is an iron-nickel-cobalt alloy, which is usually around 29% nickel, 17% cobalt, and the rest iron, with small trace amounts of elements such as manganese and silicon. It has a very low coefficient of thermal expansion, being very close to that of borosilicate glass and ceramics. The tensile strength of Kovar is around 517 MPa and it has good yield strength, as well as very good dimensional stability with thermal cycling. It also provides excellent weldability and machinability. Such mechanical properties make it perfect for hermetic sealing in electronic and aerospace components.
