17–20% chromium, 9–13% nickel, and columbium (niobium) are added to stainless steel 347 to stabilise it against intergranular corrosion. It also contains silicon, manganese, and a small amount of carbon (up to 0.08%). With good ductility and elongation (~40%), SS 347 has a yield strength of about 205 MPa and a tensile strength of roughly 515–750 MPa. The alloy has outstanding resistance to oxidation and retains strength at high temperatures. It is appropriate for demanding operating environments because it is non-magnetic when annealed and maintains its toughness even in cryogenic settings.
