Stainless Steel 440C is a martensitic stainless steel containing high carbon content and showing superior hardness and corrosion resistance. Its typical composition includes 1.0–1.2% of carbon, 16–18% chromium, and traces of manganese, silicon, and molybdenum. The alloy attains up to 60 HRC Rockwell hardness upon heat treatment. It provides tensile strength of about 760 MPa and yield strength of around 450 MPa. This grade has good strength, hardness, and edge retention coupled with fair corrosion resistance, making it effective for demanding applications needing both hardness and performance in mildly corrosive conditions.
